Hi. I got a computer the other day for my brother for like £75 of ebay not bad, 1 ghz 512 ram and a 30 gb hdd, but anyway: It comes, and he has to do some kinda homework thingy. Sadly, the computer didn't come with an operating system on it.
bare in mind that i had no sited ppl and i had a day to put xp on it and find drivers.
I had a unattend install of xp around so i put it on there.
Everythings done fine, only opps, no sound! You mean to say that i've got to put this on are wireless install office&norton with no speech?
I looked on ebay for the model number, and found it. I then looked on driverguide for sound&network&graphics drivers.
Cool, they had them, only thing is that i have to enter a code to download them.
I go onto a desktop and im someone who gets me the drivers. This is cool, but ooo, there all.exes, if they were just .inf and .sys then that'd be fine, but no.
I put the drivers on a usb stick, and put it in the computer.
Luckley the files were named stuff like sound.exe and stuff like that.
"esound.exe" gives me the xp beep sound via the pc speaker.
Hmmm, why'd that not work? "f:sound.exe" Yay! it worked! so i get sound working and put speech on there and set up office and norton.
This is why you should always get computers that have an operating system on them, and dont make the same mistake that i did!

It turned out that there were 2 cd drives in there, one beeing a cd rom and another beeing a cd-rw/dvd rom combo, which is why the usb drive wasn't showing up as e:.

That sounds like the computer from hell. Sounds like you did a really good job of making a bad situation better.
Sounds like something dell did when they sent my new hd, they didn't put an operating system on it but luckily my restore disk worked on it. Is this common when buying a new hd?

Well this wasn't new, coz it was from ebay.
Some sellers put operating systems on there computers, but for the most part if you go cheap your only going to end up with something cracked, which would most lightly contain keylogers and crap like that.
